Prominent social media platforms WhatsApp, Facebook, X (Twitter) and Telegram have seen disproportionate rise in investment scams over the last few months.

We discovered a staggering 81,000 fake investment WhatsApp groups during the period of January to June 2024.

The scammers are using sophisticated tactics, including impersonating reputed financial institutions and professionals, to lure unsuspecting investors into fake investment groups, promising quick and substantial returns.

Within these groups, scammers manipulate victims by providing fake proof of earnings and promising high returns. They then disappear with the investments, leaving victims with significant financial losses. The scam operations involve stolen data, fake profiles, and rigged trading platforms to steal money from unsuspecting victims.

Modus Operandi :

Fraudsters acquire data through various methods, including targeted social media ads, unsolicited direct messages, fake investment groups, and SMS invites.
There is a well-organized structure where criminals purchase hacked stock trading data from brokers who source it from underground forums.
These brokers sell the data to organized crime groups that operate large-scale trading scams. The crime groups employ handlers and actors to execute scams, posing as successful investors and using social media platforms to lure victims into WhatsApp groups.

How scammers lure WhatsApp users into investment scams :

  • Victims are added to random WhatsApp investing groups.
  • Multiple groups are created simultaneously.
  • The profile of a famous investor and their credentials are shared with group members
  • Discussions begin in the group, some members hyping up upcoming “lessons” or “opportunities”.
  • Initial stock tips are shared for free.
  • Active members are pushed to invest in special programs with promises of bigger rewards.
  • If a victim refuses to invest more or tries to withdraw funds, their account is disabled, and the WhatsApp group is deleted. Scammers vanish with the victims’ funds.

Investors should be cautious and watch for signs of fraud. If you receive a random invitation to join a trading community from unknown contacts, proceed with caution. Avoid falling for promises of quick wealth or guaranteed returns. “If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is”.

Update 21/09/2024 :

Newest WhatsApp update will make it easier to avoid spam groups, or those that you are being added to by strangers in order to push their own agendas (investment/romance scams etc.).

You can get a closer look at more details, like who added you and when the group was created.

That update will help potential victims and reduce WhatsApp scams drastically.

I lost $610,000 AUD in the WhatsApp trading scam, not sure how to recover my money, informed my bank and working with them but it doesn’t look good in terms of recovery! I wish I red this article before June, as the WhatsApp scam started in June, I transferred $50K AUD to start with, they booked me in for IPO worth $560k and locked my account, I had to pay from my homeloan refinace to unlock my account, then tried to withdraw money, they asked for 20% tax upfront and 15% delivery charge, then no money was given, came to know it’s a scam after loosing all the money, now I have to pay interest on the loan but not sure how I will survive!.

My Case: Names involved: Michael Peck, Lucy Herloise, Thames Private Wealth
    How:
Whatsapp Group with “investors” (probably not) and a CEO of a company called Thames Private Wealth in Columbia. They promised to rund different models. I´ll copy the text from the group here:
“New investors are welcome to join us. Our company promises to help you achieve more than 150% return on investment within a quarter through our investment plan. You can take some time to verify in the group. It will be a right choice to cooperate with our company!

The following contents in this group are all free*

    1. Volume and price trading strategy, it is expected to hold for 5-10 trading days to reach the target profit

    2. Elite core investment strategy, profit 130%-260%

    3. Practical trading investment technology course sharing

    4. After reaching a formal long-term cooperation with our company, our company will give away a quantitative intelligent stock selection APP worth 100,000 US dollars

If you have any questions, please send a private message to the assistant or me in time”

After a while the opened up a one time for free investment opportunity in a stock which is about to breaktrough and gain 200% win. JYD – if you check the stock development of Javud you will see it happened – it was a pump and dump thing. The only problem – we (the victims) pumped , they went short after some days (price had already nearly doubled) and then went short, so the price has fallen nearly to zero.

I dont see a chance of getting them, maybe if Whatsapp supports through a IP tracing, but most likely they are not doing it from their home and they us changing IPs.

So thank you for any idea.
